What does “excess” actually mean? This guide covers every car rental requirement New Zealand applies, plus the ones we apply ourselves. Every figure below is Boss Auto Rentals’ published policy for our Christchurch (Hornby) and Rolleston branches — not industry averages.

To rent a car in New Zealand you must be at least 21 years old, hold a full unrestricted driver licence you’ve held for at least 12 months, and present it in English (or with an International Driving Permit or certified English translation). You’ll also need photo ID and a credit card for the security bond. Drivers aged 21–24 pay a young driver surcharge.

Bring these to pickup — every named driver needs their own first two.
A credit card in the primary driver’s name is strongly preferred, because the bond is a pre-authorisation hold rather than a charge. Debit cards can be accepted, but many carry daily limits that block the hold. If a credit card isn’t an option, contact us before you travel.
No — a passport isn’t legally required, but it’s the simplest photo ID for visitors and we’ll ask to see it. Your driver licence is the document that matters.
No. Boss Auto Rentals hires to visitors, working-holiday travellers, new arrivals and New Zealand residents alike. There’s no residency test and no local address requirement — your licence, ID and card are the only gatekeepers.
Book 2–3 weeks ahead for normal travel, and 6–8 weeks ahead for December–February, school holidays, Christmas, New Year and Easter. Christchurch is the South Island’s main arrival airport, so availability tightens sharply in peak season — and it’s the specific vehicle type you want (SUV, 7-seater, AWD) that disappears first, not the cars in general. Same-day bookings are welcome when we have stock.
The minimum age to rent a car in New Zealand is generally 21, and that’s Boss Auto Rentals’ minimum. The maximum age is 80. Drivers aged 21–24 pay a $10 per day young driver surcharge, and every driver must have held a full licence for at least 12 months.
The distinction that catches people out: New Zealand’s legal driving age is 16, but rental eligibility is separate and stricter.
Yes — Boss Auto Rentals rents from age 21, with a full unrestricted licence held 12 months or more. Some larger chains set 25 as their floor; ours is a flat $10 per day until you turn 25.
Yes — $10 per day for drivers aged 21 to under 25. It applies to every named driver in that bracket, not just the primary one. On a 7-day hire that’s $70.
No upper age limit, and no medical certificate required for senior drivers — a current full licence is all that’s needed. Worth checking elsewhere: some Christchurch operators cap hire at 79.
No. Learner and restricted licences are not accepted for car hire in New Zealand, including at Boss Auto Rentals — nor equivalent probationary or provisional classes on overseas licences.
Only if your licence isn’t written in English. If it’s in English — UK, Australia, USA, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Singapore and similar — you don’t need an IDP to hire or drive in New Zealand. In any other language or script, carry an IDP or an NZTA-approved certified English translation alongside your original licence.
An approved translation can come from an NZTA-approved translator, a diplomatic representative at an embassy or consulate, or the licence-issuing authority. An IDP in English is usually accepted as the translation itself.
The most common mistake: carrying only the IDP. It has no standing on its own — both documents, together, every time you drive.
As of 2026, you can drive on a valid overseas car licence for 18 months from your most recent arrival in New Zealand — up from the old 12-month limit, extended by NZTA in November 2025 to ease pressure on the licence-testing system. Overseas motorcycle and truck licences remain capped at 12 months, and the clock restarts each time you re-enter. Your licence must be current and valid, you must not have been disqualified or suspended here, and you must not have obtained a NZ licence since you last arrived.

Partly-English or mixed script? Get the IDP anyway — rental counters apply stricter paperwork standards than the bare legal minimum, because insurers require clean documentation.

You choose at booking. Your bond is tied to the cover you pick — lower excess, lower bond.
Yes on any South Island road trip, and yes in winter. The maths, not the sales pitch: on a 7-day hire, dropping your excess from $2,500 to $500 typically costs less than a tank of fuel and removes $2,000 of downside. Canterbury’s alpine roads, unfamiliar left-hand driving and stone chips on SH73 make minor damage a probability, not a hypothetical. Hiring a hatchback for three days of city errands? Standard Cover is a reasonable call.
Sometimes — but verify before you decline ours. Check three things: does it cover New Zealand for the full duration; is it reimbursement-based (most are — we still hold the full bond, so you need the card headroom regardless); and what voids it — single-vehicle accidents, undercarriage, tyres, windscreens and unsealed roads are common exclusions.
Cover can be voided entirely — full repair value, not just the excess — if you breach the agreement:
That last one surprises people. Report first, sort the rest later.
Report it to Boss Auto Rentals and the Police immediately, complete an accident report, and your liability is capped at your chosen excess — $2,500, $1,500 or $500 depending on your cover. Nothing more, provided you were within the rental agreement. The sequence matters: report first, then arrange repairs through us. Organising your own repair or delaying the report is what turns a capped excess into an uncapped bill.

A refundable hold placed on your card at pickup, sized to the cover you select, and released after the vehicle is returned and inspected. Fuel policy: full to full. Petrol stations sit five minutes from Christchurch Airport on Memorial Avenue and Harewood Road — fill up there and the $20 charge never touches you.
Cancellation: full refund within 24 hours of booking if pickup is 48+ hours away; 50% up to 48 hours before pickup; no refund inside 48 hours.

Yes — one-way rentals are available between select locations including Christchurch and Queenstown, subject to availability and a one-way fee. Popular for South Island road trips where you fly into CHC and out of ZQN.
